About the Engineering Manager Role
Leadership at UpHill goes beyond delivering results — it’s about laying the foundation for continuous, sustainable growth.
In our fast-paced, multi-disciplinary environment, delivering once isn’t enough. The real challenge lies in continuously delivering value while navigating the complexities of product development in healthcare. Continuous improvement isn’t a luxury; it’s a necessity. It means raising the bar relentlessly and embracing a mindset of growth, clarity, and focus.
As an Engineering Manager, you’ll be a catalyst for high-performing, empowered teams. You’ll foster an environment that champions continuous improvement, nurtures talent, and cultivates a culture of shared purpose and clear context. If you’re driven by meaningful work, operational excellence, and a culture where innovation thrives, we’d love to meet you.
Responsibilities
Here are the four principles that define this role:
People
- Attract and hire top talent who combine strong technical skills with alignment to UpHill’s culture and values.
- Lead through connection — conducting regular 1:1s focused on coaching, mentoring, and supporting individual growth.
Purpose
- Collaborate closely with Product to ensure the team is always working on the most impactful company objectives.
- Raise the bar by driving personal and team growth through well-defined objectives, regular feedback loops, and fair, transparent performance reviews.
- Align cross-functionally, proactively removing blockers and ensuring the team has the context and clarity needed to succeed.
Process
- Facilitate core squad rituals — including sprint planning, retrospectives, backlog refinement, and more — to maintain healthy, predictable delivery cycles.
- Drive continuous improvement in the Software Development Lifecycle, incorporating practices like CI/CD, effective incident response, and DORA metrics to optimize team performance.
- Continuously evaluate and evolve these practices to meet the growing demands of our product and teams.
Systems
- Take end-to-end ownership of the team’s systems, from uptime to user impact.
- Monitor system health, track key metrics, and drive proactive improvements.
- Lead incident management: run incident calls, drive thorough postmortems, and ensure fair on-call rotations, upholding operational excellence.
Successful Candidate:
- 3+ years of experience leading high-performing, cross-functional squads in fast-paced, agile environments.
- Previously a Senior Backend Engineer (5+ years), with deep hands-on experience building and scaling production systems.
- Proven experience in scaling systems and teams, with a strong understanding of system design, architecture, and performance bottlenecks.
- Strong background working on compliance-regulated platforms (e.g. healthcare, payments, fintech), with familiarity in security, auditing, and data privacy best practices.
- Track record of hiring and developing engineers across multiple levels and disciplines — from junior to senior, backend to frontend.
- Experience in mentoring engineers, supporting career growth, and fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement.
- Comfortable owning the full engineering lifecycle — from roadmap planning to delivery, incident response, and system health.
- Strong collaboration skills, working closely with product, design, and stakeholders to ensure alignment and unblock teams.
- Advocate of modern engineering practices, including CI/CD, DORA metrics, observability, and high-quality code standards.
- Strong communicator, with the ability to influence without authority, drive alignment, and navigate ambiguity.
